SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES OF BLADDER INFECTION

SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES OF BLADDER INFECTION

Women are at greater risk of developing a UTI than men are. Infection limited to your bladder can be painful and annoying. However, serious consequences can occur if a UTI spreads to your kidneys.
Doctors typically treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics. But you can take steps to reduce your chances of getting a UTI in the first place.
First we try to know what is UTI……………

What is a bladder infection?

Bladder infection is an infection of the bladder. Bladder infection is also called cystitis and is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI). The urinary tract is naturally sterile and when microbes invade it, an infection may result.
The bladder is a part of the urinary tract system. It serves as storage for urine before it is excreted from the body. Urine is produced by the kidney and it travels through ureters (one from the right kidney and one from the left) to pass into the bladder. The urine can then be eliminated from the body when bladder is full. The bladder contracts to empty its contents outside through the urethra (the connection between the bladder and outside of the body). Urethra length traverses the length of the penis in males, thus it is longer than the urethra in females.

Causes

Urinary tract infections typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. Although the urinary system is designed to keep out such microscopic invaders, these defenses sometimes fail. When that happens, bacteria may take hold and grow into a full-blown infection in the urinary tract.

UTI mainly occurs due to the following reasons:
  • Cystitis: It is one of the most common causes of UTI. It mainly happens due to sexual intercourse when the harmful bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract cause infection in the bladder. Though, sometimes, females can also develop cystitis without any intercourse.
  • Urethritis: This type of UTI can occur when GI bacteria spread from the anus to the urethra. Also, because the female urethra is close to the vagina, sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia and mycoplasma, can cause urethritis.
  • Pregnancy
  • Kidney stones
  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Waiting too long to urinate

Symptoms

  • Cloudy or yellow-colored urine
  • Burning sensation while passing urine
  • Frequent feeling to urinate
  • Urination in small quantities
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Foul-smell while urinating
  • Traces of blood with urine
